Can you explain the role of CGI (architectural images) in planning applications in France? How crucial is that? As an architectural CGI specialist, I believe that good situational images can add a lot more to convince authorities and the public.

My understanding is that a French permit application must include a graphic document showing the project in its surroundings, but the rules don't specify a technique, so a sketch or photomontage is as acceptable as computer-generated imagery.
Nevertheless, photomontages seem to be the norm in practice, with photorealistic modelled insertions increasingly expected on larger or sensitive schemes.

It's interesting to know how different countries approach CGI use. When I worked for Australian clients they asked only photomontaged images for building permit.
